Splash! At Ras Abu Galum

Get aboard your camel and let’s go diving!

World Champion freediver Sara Campbell and the Blue Eye FX crew were on location near Dahab for the Ras Abu Galum shoot for Splash on The Underwater Channel.

Meeting at Dahab’s famous Blue Hole, we loaded our equipment and ourselves aboard the day’s transportation that was truly Egyptian – you can only reach the beautiful and remote Ras Abu Galum by foot or by camel! The scenery on route is beautiful where the mountains and desert meet the reef and the varying colours of the sea. This is a national park of outstanding beauty, with lovely reefs for diving or snorkeling.

However, the film crew had little time to take it all in! While Sara travelled in style perched atop her camel, the film crew was generally on foot, running to get ahead of the camel train to set up the next shot. For Blue Eye FX, it was like army training in the desert! What is normally about an hour’s walk seemed much longer!

Abu Galum is a Managed Resource Protected Area that covers an area of about 400km², situated on the east coast of South Sinai, right between Dahab and Nuweiba. It protects various coastal and mountain ecosystems that are unique to the Gulf of Aqaba. The coral reef is mostly undisturbed with a high diversity of reef fish, whose richness of its flora and fauna is overwhelming.

Abu Galum is one of the most beautiful protectorates in Egypt. The area boasts high mountains, stunning wadis, fresh-water springs, picturesque sand dunes, coral reefs and gravel alluvial fans. Abu Galum hosts about 165 plant species, 45 of which are unique to the area.

To protect Abu Galum as a Natural Resource Area, vehicles are only allowed to drive on marked trails. Bedouin guides are available to lead you and your camel to the places of interest.
