MFO Golf Day

BEFX has traditionally had involvement with the Sharm el Sheikh MFO troops via filming daily diving trips. Obviously, many of the MFO troops take full advantage of the opportunity to dive in the Red Sea while stationed here!

This year BEFX were invited to do something a little different. The MFO hosted a Golf Day with some 40-odd, would-be ‘Tigers’ turning out at the Maritim Jolie Ville Golf & Resort. BEFX provided two camera crew and one photographer to cover the event. The day was a riot from start to finish – exploding golf balls; bungled birdies; buggy calamities; and some pretty interesting golf styles!

The Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) is an independent international organisation, headquartered in Rome, with peacekeeping responsibilities in the Sinai. The origins of the MFO lie in Annex I to the 1979 Treaty of Peace between Egypt and Israel, in which the parties undertook to request the United Nations to provide a force and observers to supervise the implementation of the treaty. When it did not prove possible to obtain Security Council approval for the stationing of a UN peacekeeping force in the Sinai, the parties negotiated a Protocol in 1981 establishing the MFO “as an alternative” to the envisioned UN force.

Since 1982, various nations have contributed military and civilian personnel to serve in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula as part of this highly successful organisation. The ten currently Participating States are Australia, Canada, Colombia, Fiji, France, Hungary, Italy, New Zealand, the United States and Uruguay. Norway, while not a Participating State, provides the MFO with four staff officers.
