Vertical Blue 2009, the invitational freediving competition, has drawn to a close with an incredible 32 National Records and 5 World Records being set.

The event finished on an 'all time low' with an amazing performance from Austrian, Herbert Nitsch who dived to a depth of 120 metres using a monofin and only one breath in just 3 minutes and 58 seconds. Event organiser and World Record holder, Will Trubridge said of the feat: "this is one of the most impressive performances in freediving and is a testimony to the form and capacity of this amazing athlete."

Trubridge himself also scooped a World Record in the competition diving without fins to a depth of 88 metres in three and half minutes. Other notable performances and new entrants to the '100 metres or over club' included Ryuzo Shinomiya (105 metres CWT and a Japanese record), Walter Steyn from Australia (100 metres CWT, Australian record) and of course new World Record holder, British diver Sara Campbell who achieved the dive to 100 metres but unfortunately failed to meet the surface protocol, having suffered a short black-out at the surface.

Having reached 99 metres CWT, Italian Davide Carrera took the decision to save his 100 metre attempt for waters closer to home and will attempt the dive in the Mediterranean some time in the future.

The entire event was, of course, captured and documented by Blue Eye FX Productions who were the official film crew for the event.
